TEACHING WITH PILLAR SEMINARY

The Pillar Seminary teaches all classes online. We employ the flipped-classroom model (see it explained here) and offer classes designed to bring about not only content mastery, but skill transfer. We intend for class time to be hands-on learning with students. In this model, the professor is more a coach or mentor than a lecturer. As an Adjunct professor, course content (lectures, reading, assignments) will be provided. Your job will be to guide students as they process the content during class time. Successful applicants will receive coaching in this approach to ensure that the student experience is of the highest quality. We use Google Classroom for course materials and Zoom for class time. The applicant must be comfortable with this software or willing to be taught (Pillar account access will be provided for all software).

COURSE DESCRIPTION

The Biblical Narrative series is required for all programs at Pillar Seminary. These two classes are devoted to developing the skills and knowledge necessary to use the stories and the story of Scripture to shape students’ understanding of who the Lord is, what he cares about, and what he asks of them in their contexts. The student will read every story from Abraham through Paul’s journey to Rome over the course of Biblical Narrative 1 and Biblical Narrative 2. The skills developed include reading the stories within historical, geographic, cultural, and literary contexts. Special attention is devoted to learning the literary skills necessary for reliably deriving meaning from the stories.

Narrative 1 students will learn the stories within the biblical narrative from Abraham to the beginning of the United Monarchy. This includes learning the geography of the stories, as well as understanding broadly the historical context in which the stories take place. Students are also introduced to concepts of historiography and current issues in historicity and historiography related to the biblical narrative. Importantly, students will acquire and exercise skills needed to discover the meaning of the stories in their immediate, local, and book-wide contexts.

ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES 

  • Command of the relevant portions of the Old Testament (Genesis through 2 Samuel) and their respective ancient Near Eastern contexts
  • Communication skills (interpersonal, written word, email)
  • Working knowledge of Google Suite of products (Docs, Sheets, Drive, Classroom, Sites, etc.)
  • Working knowledge of Zoom software

DUTIES

  • Prepare for class time by working through the course materials
  • Guide students through the relevant biblical passages and genre particularities during class time
  • Grade assignments and assign grades at the end of the semester
  • Provide prompt and supportive interaction with students as needed
  • Occasional meetings with Academic Dean and other faculty members

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Terminal degree in field of study required (ABD candidates will also be considered)

  • Active, growing relationship with Jesus Christ
  • Active participation in a local church

  • Teaching experience in requisite field of study (seminary experience preferred)
  • Must work well with others on a team
  • Must be able to engage others in a courteous and professional manner
  • This is a remote position. You must be able to provide your own computer and workspace sufficient to meet the demands of the job. An institutional email account will be provided.
  • Must be able to provide your own phone for work use purposes.
