TEACHING WITH PILLAR SEMINARY

The Pillar Seminary teaches all classes online. We employ the flipped-classroom model (see it explained here) and offer classes designed to bring about not only content mastery, but skill transfer. We intend for class time to be hands-on learning with students. In this model, the professor is more a coach or mentor than a lecturer. As an Adjunct professor, all course content (lectures, reading, assignments) will be provided. Your job will be to guide students as they process the content during your class time. Successful applicants will receive coaching in this approach to ensure that the student experience is of the highest quality. We use Google Classroom for course materials and Zoom for class time. The applicant must be comfortable with this software or willing to be taught (Pillar account access will be provided for all software).

COURSE DESCRIPTION

The Canon in Context series builds on the Biblical Narrative series. Canon in Context courses focus on developing the skills necessary for interpreting the remaining genres in both the Old and New Testaments and the student’s ability to view their context through these Scriptures. Class time in Canon in Context courses centers on practicing skills in the remaining biblical genres with the professor and fellow students. The Old Testament portion of the series follows the historical divisions of Torah, Prophets, and Writings. The New Testament portion is divided into the Gospels, and then Acts, Letters, and Revelation.

In this class, students acquire the literary competency needed for exegesis and continued study of the Torah (Pentateuch). Since the skills for reading narrative have been covered in Biblical Narrative 1-2, this class focuses on cosmology, law, and ritual. Students will create two genre handbooks, one for cosmology and one for law and ritual, to be used for future study. Students will also learn the introductory material for all books covered in the section, including authorship/composition, structure, major interpretive issues, and history of interpretation. Throughout the class students will review and refine their understanding of the narrative sections of Torah.
