The King is Here! An Archaeological, Topographical, and Theological Investigation of John 5:1-18

Join us for this FREE virtual workshop with Dr. Kyle Keimer. We’ll explore how the physical and historical settings of Jesus’ ministry deepen our understanding of his teachings and actions. This event examines the theological significance of Jesus’ words in relation to the locations where he delivered them and interprets his actions through the lens of their physical and cultural context. It also highlights how archaeological discoveries provide essential insights into the biblical text and the world in which it was written. Gain a deeper appreciation for the connection between scripture and its real-world setting.

Learning Objectives

Recognize that Jesus’ words convey specific theological truths that are only clear when the physical location in which he delivers them is understood.

Identify the theological messages being conveyed by Jesus based on his actions when those actions are understood within their physical context.

Acknowledge that the archaeological record provides important insights for reading the biblical text and for providing the context in which specific words and actions are set.

Dr. Kyle Keimer

Kyle specializes in the archaeology of ancient Israel and the Hebrew Bible. Currently, his research focuses on the archaeology of the early Israelite monarchy, the books of Samuel, historical geography, and Israelite religion. Since 2018 he has co-directed excavations at Khirbet el-Ra’i, Israel. He also teaches for Jerusalem University College and was Senior Lecturer in the archaeology, history, and languages of ancient Israel and the Near East at Macquarie University, Sydney before returning to the U.S. Previous publications include The Ancient Israelite World (Routledge, 2023, with George A. Pierce), Registers and Modes of Communication in the Ancient Near East: Getting the Message Across (Routledge, 2018, with Gillan Davis), and numerous articles. Kyle co-hosts the Biblical World podcast which explores the archaeological, historical, geographical, and cultural backgrounds of the Bible.
